RIP John Hughes

Today the news broke, that on a early morning walk in New York City, director, producer & writer John Hughes died of an apparent heart attack. This may sound like hyperbole, but there’s not many people in the world of entertainment that shaped my childhood as much as John Hughes. You don’t really realize how influential he was to anyone growing up in the 80’s or 90’s until you sit back and look at all the movies he either produced, directed, or wrote.

As someone who was born in the mid-1980’s, I was raised on movies like Uncle Buck, Baby’s Day Out, Home Alone 1 & 2, Dennis the Menace, and Beethoven. Looking back, some of those movies may not be enjoyable for me to watch now, but as a kid those were the movies I gravitated towards. I can’t count the times in primary & elementary school during sick days & snow days where one of those movies was watched. Later on in life I discovered his earlier work, which I still love watching now, such as Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He created the modern teenager movie, and perfected it. His influence will be felt for decades to come, as others try to replicate what he did in that genre.

As far as movies go, from kid to adult, besides Steven Spielberg, there’s no one else’s work that I grew up watching, like Hughes’ work. So for that I thank you Mr. Hughes!

One of the great things about a John Hughes movies was the way he added music to them. Here’s one of my favourite scenes from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off:
